The Octopus has many defenses, but before it shoots ink or runs away, the octopus will “Jet”. It points its siphon at the threat (i.e. me the photographer) and shoots a concentrated stream of water at up to 30mph, which may not sound like much, but it’ll knock your hand out of the way for sure. With this defense, the animals uses almost no energy, but remains safe in its hole.
